The wheelchair accessible Air B+B in Homer AK should be on everyone’s bucket list!!!

I found a handicapped Air BnB, right off the main road but not in the downtown or near The Spit, which is a 4.5 mile long piece of land with tourist shops and restaurants and the harbor boats. The house had a view of the Kachemak Bay with the snowy mountains as a backdrop.

We woke up to another hot 80 degrees day. Good thing I brought my sunglasses, but after sitting in the strong sun for a few hours I got my first sunburn of 2022 IN ALASKA! Who would have thunk!

The Spit

We went to the Kilcher Homestead which is regularly filmed on discovery plus. Owners of the homestead, Ruth and Yule who both immigrated to Homer from Switzerland and married out of convenience. Online dating for the early homesteader. The mom was a true badass, running the homestead, caring for the animals, the children, cooking, cleaning and even participating in local politics, no electricity and forever stuck with an outhouse, her only escape was through her poetry. One of her poems can be found on the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington Cemetery, small world. The house tour is not accessible, so I chose to sit outside and listen to them. After the tour, we had a picnic in the grass outside of the Kilcher Homestead and two of the adult children came over to speak with us.

The next day my mom and I went to The Wynn Nature Center. They had board walks through the woods. It was just beautiful with the blue sky, dark trees, green grass and colorful flowers as the backdrop. The board walk dipped down in places, which was an accessibility issue, but if I’m honest, I could have sat there with my book and been happy.

We also did the accessible trail behind The Pratt Museum. The view was incredible. The trail was metal, so my chair wheeled great on it.

One day we did a ferry ride to Seldovia, on The Kachemak Voyage Ferry which I highly recommend, (the Rainbow ferry is NOT wheelchair accessible). Few people live there year-round and the locals have to ride the ferry to Homer to go grocery shopping. Makes you appreciate your twenty minute ride to the store.

We walked down the street to Inside Beach which was a beautiful rocky beach. My sister pulled my chair through the rocks and we had a lovely picnic on a beach with bald eagles flying above. We bought some stamps for mailing postcards and headed back to the dock where everyone watched the seals and otters play.

We finally checked out The Spit, a lot of shops and restaurants. We also went to a local art gallery and I bought a painting I fell in love with. Homer is known for their art. We ate at the Harbor Bar & Grille. I found it to be very touristy, the food was good but nothing that stood out to me.

Then we drove back up towards Seward and made a stop in Soldotna for a flea market, where I got my hat. There were so many vendors.
