Wheelchair Stopover in Santiago
We flew from Lima to Santiago on Latam. We were only there for 2 nights.
First off, Cascada & ecoCamp Patagonia, where I was going next, booked everything for me. This was very helpful…kind of.
She knew I was in a wheelchair, but there were a few hiccups but I do not blame her, my trip was amazing.
But, when booking for someone in a wheelchair you need to be literal and triple check.
For instance, when we met the driver with a handicapped van, there was no wheelchair lift. A triple check would have caught that.
His plan was to grab one side of my wheelchair while my BIL grabbed the other side and they lifted me into the van. Facepalm! What if I was alone?
Hotel Cumbres Lastarria
We stayed at the Hotel Cumbres Lastarria in the Art district. We got there at night so we just went to our rooms. I got my own room and my own bed.
The bathroom, the toilet was in the corner next to the shower, with a pull down bar that just so happened to be broken. Facepalm!
Before you ask, I did not break it, it was already loose in the wall and no one noticed? THIS IS HOW PEOPLE GET HURT! This is why we told the front desk in Johannesburg when I broke the glass.
I know I told the Cascada booking lady that I needed a roll shower at ecoCamp, I don't know what happened. The shower had a little step, definitely not a roll in. FACEPALM!!!!!
The hotel people were selling the room blind meaning they are going off a list someone else writes what each room has, which also means they don't know what ROLL IN shower means. I find this problem everywhere, U.S. included.
They had a shower chair in the middle, this shower is for someone who can walk a little, I don't know who could transfer safely from a wheelchair. The sink was a roll under. There was one king bed just for me.
The room was beautiful. It had a tv, a table with two chairs and a complimentary bottle of wine.
The room was on the second floor. I can’t explain the view, the hotel had artistic flare cutouts over the window–just look at the photo, that night they had flamethrowers but I could barely see out the window.
They did have an elevator, thank god. They had a complimentary breakfast every morning: egg, meat, pastries and fruit.
Wonderland Cafe
For lunch we walked to Alice’s Room. It was a little restaurant that was all Alice in Wonderland themed. It wasn’t accessible, figures. My sister and her husband lifted me in.
We drank high tea and ate finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam. They also had a few vegan options! But I'm a sucker for clotted cream.
After this we walked to the main square. On the sidewalk there were a bunch of students selling 90s clothing (one full outfit each, with shoes) and a few books. Anything for a buck.
Then we walked to Catedral De Santiago which was free to go in, and it was beautiful.
Plaza de Armas de Santiago
After that we sat in the middle of the square. We sat in a jungle of palm trees. I'd say the weather was in the 70’s, perfect.
Then we pretty much just walked around and explored. We went to a bakery, but it had a step in so I just waited outside.
Where we ate
We went to Papachecos, a place where you could get a cone of French fries and you could choose your own dipping sauces. Depending on the sauce you could make it vegan! I have no photos so I am using pictures off Google
We went to a pharmacy where they had a window that you could walk up to and order what you needed, and then they would go and get it for you. Fast food pharmacy.
We also went to this all vegan restaurant - Makani Shawarma. They had amazing falafel and lemonade.
After walking around a bit more, we ended up at Tres Valles Restaurant Lastarria. It was an Italian restaurant.
Then we went back to our hotel. They had these street dancers with balls of fire that they were swinging around. Then we went to bed.
The next morning I woke up and had the hotel’s complimentary breakfast. They had a lot of pastries, but it was a mini buffet.
Then we had the same driver pick us up in the non accessible van and brought us to the airport.
I don't know whose fault this was, I guess mine I didn't triple check, but the scheduled time for the driver to bet us should have been earlier because we missed our flight and had to re-buy for the next flight.
We flew on Sky Airlines and we went to Puerto Natales. Stay tuned to hear about this terrifying flight.
